Your Guide to the Chapel of the Holy Cross
History of the Chapel of the Holy Cross
If you head south of Sedona past the Airport Mesa and look to your left, you’ll see a distinct, modern building nestled in the Red Rocks above a neighborhood. This stunning structure, known as the Chapel of the Holy Cross, stands in the same spot since 1956. Local rancher and sculpture Marguerite Brunswig Staude first had the idea to build a chapel with architect Frank Lloyd Wright in the early 1930s in Budapest, Hungary, but the start of World War II thwarted their plans. Eventually, they settled on the current location on the Coconino National Forest, and the dream became a reality. It is now an area icon and one of the top wedding venues in Sedona.
Visiting the Chapel of the Holy Cross
You can visit the Chapel of the Holy Cross for free. It’s open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. seven days a week (aside from Christmas and Easter). Check their schedule for weekly Taizé Prayer services. The gift shop on the bottom floor of the chapel is also open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 a.m.
Hiking Near the Chapel of the Holy Cross
The Chapel Trail stems from the church parking lot and follows the base of the Red Rocks until it meets with Little Horse Trail. From there, it’s a short hike to the scenic Chicken Point Overlook. Overall, the Chapel Trail section is about a 1.3-mile out-and-back hike that is a fun activity for the family.
Chapel of the Holy Cross Vortex
The Sedona vortexes are among some of the most famous attractions in our area. In addition to being a house of worship, this is one of the spiritual vortexes. While it may be slightly different in terms of the energy fields purported to lie here, this vortex brings a sense of gratitude to those visiting.
